The bases located in San Diego include:

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar
Used by both the Navy and Marine Corps for advanced pilot training during World War II, post-war it became famous as the home of the Top Gun program. MCAS Miramar is currently the home base for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is the aviation element of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton
The US Marine Corps' prime amphibious training base on the west coast, Camp Pendleton is home to the I Marine Expeditionary Force. Amphibious and sea-to-shore training takes place at several key points along the base's 17 miles of coastline.

Naval Air Station North Island is the homeport of two aircraft carriers along with 23 fixed- and rotary-wing squadrons. Naval Amphibious Base Coronado is home to the U.S. Navy's special and expeditionary warfare training and the West Coast base of operations for SEAL teams and Special Boat Units.

Naval Base Point Loma
Point Loma has a rich military history due to its natural tactical significance as the only peninsula in the area that guards the surrounding waters. Current major commands include Commander Third Fleet, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, and Submarine Squadron Eleven.

Naval Base San Diego
Naval Base San Diego is the U.S. Navy's largest base on the West Coast and the principal homeport of the Pacific Fleet.
